Controller

San Diego, CA
Full Time
Senior Manager/Supervisor

Controller

Location: North County San Diego
Work Model: Hybrid – Onsite Monday + one additional onsite day of your choice
Compensation: $160K–$170K base + Profit Sharing

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on, highly technical Controller to own the complete financial statements and one additional entity. This individual will not be siloed, this is a full-spectrum accounting leadership role that touches every part of the P&L and balance sheet, with deep involvement in GAAP interpretation, financial close, audit, and business partnership.

You will report to the recently promoted Controller (your trainer and mentor), and lead a dispersed team across San Diego, Florida, and Mexico. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments, loves technical accounting, and brings strong leadership with a balanced, approachable style.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Statements & Close (Primary Accountability)

  • Own full financial statements (P&L and Balance Sheet) for two entities.

  • Review and post journal entries; ensure accruals are accurate and complete.

  • Perform detailed line-by-line income statement reviews.

  • First-level approval on statements → reviewed by Controller → then CFO.

  • Manage a 3-day month-end close.

Technical Accounting / GAAP

  • Apply and interpret US GAAP with confidence.

  • Draft GAAP memos for new pronouncements and complex areas.

  • Provide guidance on fixed assets, capitalization of software, and judgment-heavy topics.

  • Partner with CFO and external auditors to ensure proper implementation.

Audit & Internal Controls

  • Lead preparation of the annual audit PBC list (hundreds of items).

  • Review staff-prepared audit schedules for accuracy.

  • Collaborate closely with external auditors; support SOX/internal audit initiatives.

Team Leadership

  • Lead 3 direct reports across CA and FL; provide coaching, development, and performance oversight.

  • Indirectly support a team of ~15 in Mexico.

  • Set quality standards, deadlines, and expectations across shared-services teams (AP, general accounting, and AR for one entity).

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner actively with Manufacturing, HR, Sales, IT/IS, Purchasing, Mexico Operations, and Distribution Centers.

  • Help internal teams understand charges, GL activity, and financial impact.

  • Bring a business-partner mindset, not a checklist mentality.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Public accounting experience (preferably Big 4 or strong regional firm).

  • CPA required.

  • Strong understanding of US GAAP, including ability to draft and explain GAAP memos.

  • Experience owning full financial statements in a mid-sized or large company.

  • Experience managing teams (direct + indirect).

  • Strong detail orientation with ownership of accuracy and deadlines.

  • Comfortable with Team travel to different sites (3x a year)

Industry Experience

  • Manufacturing industry experience strongly preferred; candidates with exposure to inventory, COGS, or production environments will be prioritized.

  • Adjacent industries such as biotech or industrial environments are acceptable; construction/service-only backgrounds are less aligned.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred; Finance acceptable.

  • Unrelated majors not considered for this role.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Hybrid:

    • Mandatory onsite Monday & choose one additional onsite day (2 days total)

  • Month-end close: occasionally up to 8–9pm on one night

  • Strong emphasis on work-life balance
