Director of Resident Care
Position Summary
The Director of Resident Care is responsible for the overall leadership, clinical oversight, and operational management of resident care services within an assisted living and memory care environment. This role ensures high-quality care delivery, regulatory compliance, staff development, and resident and family satisfaction while aligning departmental operations with organizational standards and budgetary guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Staff Management
Lead, train, supervise, and evaluate resident care staff, including performance management and corrective action as needed
Approve staff schedules and ensure appropriate staffing levels aligned with departmental budgets
Oversee employee development, performance reviews, and compensation recommendations
Ensure all caregiving staff maintain required certifications and ongoing training
Participate in Manager-on-Duty rotations, including weekends and holidays as needed
Partner with leadership and department managers to ensure coordinated, high-quality service delivery
Resident Care Oversight
Execute and monitor physician orders to maintain optimal resident health outcomes
Conduct ongoing resident assessments to determine care needs and appropriateness of placement
Coordinate resident care conferences with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams
Support hospital and skilled nursing transitions, including follow-up and reintegration into the community
Respond to resident emergencies and crisis situations as required
Build and maintain strong relationships with residents, families, and responsible parties
Compliance & Regulatory Management
Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including California Department of Social Services requirements
Lead preparation for state surveys and audits
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete resident care documentation
Determine and monitor resident admission and continued residency eligibility criteria
Coordinate and deliver ongoing in-service training to support regulatory compliance and quality care
Administrative & Operational Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and refine departmental policies, procedures, and workflows
Oversee medication management programs, ensuring proper training and compliance for MedTechs and caregivers
Manage departmental budgets, reports, and operational metrics
Determine equipment and supply needs within established budget parameters
Participate in leadership meetings and contribute to operational planning initiatives
Qualifications
Education
Graduate of an accredited nursing program
Licensure & Certifications
Active and valid California RN or LVN license
Current CPR certification
Experience
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a Director of Nursing or equivalent leadership role within a California assisted living and/or memory care community
Demonstrated experience working with dementia and Alzheimer’s populations
